One day, my friend and I visited a public toilet. When we got there, the caretaker told us there were two options:

  1. A cheaper toilet.
  2. A more expensive toilet.

Being smart with our money, we chose the cheaper one. But as soon as we stepped inside—BOOM! The stench hit us like a slap in the face. Urine and feces were everywhere, and it was impossible to stay in there. We immediately walked out.

Later, we decided to try the more expensive toilet, and this time, it was a completely different experience. It was spotless, odor-free, and well-maintained—so comfortable that you could even sleep there

What Is Mechanical Filtration?

Mechanical filtration physically removes solid waste like fish feces, uneaten feed, and debris before they decompose and pollute the water.

How Does Mechanical Filtration Work?

  • Water passes through a physical filter, which traps waste particles.
  • Clean water flows into biological filtration, where bacteria break down dissolved toxins.

Components of Mechanical Filters

  • Sedimentation tanks (settle heavy waste at the bottom).
  • Filter pads & foam filters (trap small debris).
  • Drum filters & sand filters (used for advanced farms).

Downsides of Mechanical Filtration 

  1. Requires regular cleaning to prevent clogging. So this is time and energy-consuming 
  2. It does not remove dissolved toxins (it needs biological filtration for that). But the good news is that you can incorporate the two.

What Is Biological Filtration?

Biological filtration uses beneficial bacteria to break down toxic ammonia from fish waste into less harmful nitrates.

How Does the Biological Filtration Work?

  • Fish release ammonia, which is highly toxic.
  • Bacteria convert ammonia → nitritesnitrates.
  • Nitrates are removed via water changes or absorbed by plants (if using aquaponics).

Why Is Biological Filtration Important?

  • Keeps water safe by preventing ammonia buildup.
  • Allows high stocking densities without frequent water changes.

Chemical filtration removes dissolved toxins and impurities using materials like activated carbon, zeolite, or special resins.

Aeration increases the dissolved oxygen (DO) in water by creating movement and breaking the water surface. Common aeration methods include:

  • Surface agitators (like paddlewheels to increase oxygen exchange).
  • Venturi systems (inject oxygen into water using pressure).

  • Prevents deadly ammonia buildup – Oxygen helps break down waste faster.
  • Circulate Water – Aeration causes water in the pond to move and not stock. This also increases the chemical breakdown of the pond.
