He started a tilapia farming venture by constructing a concrete pond and stocking it with 700 fingerlings. Unfortunately, all the fish died within three days. Determined to succeed, he stocked another 700 fingerlings, but they also died within a week.
This devastating loss forced him to rethink his approach. He reached out to me for help, and my team and I visited his farm to identify the issues.

Upon inspecting his farm, we found two critical problems:
1. Why Is Pond Curing Necessary in Fish Farming?
The concrete pond hadn’t been cured properly. Concrete releases harmful chemicals into the water, making it toxic for fish. Without curing, these chemicals can kill fish almost immediately.

How Did We Fix the Problems? Practical Solutions That Work
To address these issues and save his fish farming business, we implemented the following solutions:
1. Properly Curing the Pond
Curing a concrete pond is essential to neutralize harmful chemicals. Here’s what we did:
- We filled the pond with water and added plantain stalks and leaves.
- The pond was left to soak for three weeks, during which the organic materials absorbed the toxic substances.
- When we noticed maggots in the pond, we then removed all the waste and drained the dirty water.
- We washed the fishpond thoroughly and salt-bathed it.
- We then filled the concrete fish pond with clean water and because it was a metropolitan assembly water we allowed it to stand for three days.
- After three days time we stocked the fish again.
2. Adjusting the Stocking Density
Stocking density directly affects fish health and survival. We calculated the pond’s carrying capacity and reduced the stocking density to 500 fish. This ensured that the pond environment could support the fish without overloading its oxygen and filtration systems.
3. Installing a Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS)
To create a sustainable and healthy pond environment, we installed:
- A Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) to filter waste and improve water quality. The RAS also support fish to grow bigger.
- An aeration system to maintain adequate oxygen levels. This also break down the ammonia level in the pond.
- With these systems in place, the farm became productive and profitable.
